Research Fellow (PhD Candidate) in Marine Biology at Departement of Biology

At the Department of Biology (BIO – http://www.uib.no/bio/en)
a 3-year position as Research Fellow is available in the field of
Marine Microbiology, within the project “Diversity and dynamics of
marine haptophytes (HAPTODIV), funded by the Research Council of
Norway. The project is a collaboration between the Universities of Oslo
(UiO) and Bergen (UiB), Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA)
in Oslo and CNRS, Station Biologique de Roscoff in France.

The PhD research fellow will be affiliated to the research group Marin mikrobiologi (http://www.bio.uib.no/pages/forskergruppe.php?lang=N&gid=1012) at BIO.

The successful candidate shall, in collaboration with the other project
partners, explore the biodiversity of haptophytes in North Atlantic
Coastal waters and how their abundance and distribution in time and
space are controlled by abiotic and biotic factors. The research work
will consist of both lab and field work and it will be possible with a
3-months research stay at Station Biologique de Roscoff in France.
The work includes isolation and characterisation of new haptophyte
strains, especially within the order Prymnesiales, and their viruses.
Molecular methods for identification and quantification of algae and
algal viruses will be developed and these methods will then be applied
on natural sea water samples collected during the field work.
There will also be announced a PhD position in the same project at the
University of Oslo (UIO) (please see separate announcement for UiO).
The candidate appointed at UiB will work with virus, whereas the
candidate appointed at UiO will primarily work with algae. The
positions must be applied for separately at the respective
institutions.

For further information about the position please contact Professor Gunnar Bratbak gunnar.bratbak@bio.uib.no

The research fellow must take part in the University's approved PhD
programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years.
Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a project
plan outline for the training module, will be worked out in
collaboration with the research group in question.

The fellowship period may be reduced if the successful applicant has held previous employment as research fellow.

Applicants must have achieved a master’s degree or equivalent in
biology or have submitted their master thesis for assessment by the
application deadline. It is a prerequisite, however, that the formal
admission requirements for the PhD programme are met before appointment
can be made.

Candidates with speciality in microbiology or virology will be
preferred. Experience in the use of molecular biological techniques
(PCR, sequencing, cloning etc.), flowcytometri and algal culturing will
strengthen the application. Knowledge in microalgal biology, marine
biology, ecology, molecular ecology and experience in use of electron
microscopy are also relevant.

The teaching language will normally be Norwegian.
Initial salaries at grade 45 (code 1017/pay framework 20.3) in the
Civil Service pay grade table; currently NOK .353,200 gross p.a.;
following ordinary meriting regulations (wage range 45–51).

State employment shall reflect the multiplicity of the population at
large to the highest possible degree. The University of Bergen has
therefore adopted a personnel policy objective to ensure that we
achieve a balanced age and sex composition and the recruitment of
persons of various ethnic backgrounds. Persons of different ethnic
backgrounds are therefore encouraged to apply for the position.

The University of Bergen applies the principles of public openness when recruiting staff to scientific positions.

Information about the applicant may be made public even though the
applicant has requested not to be named in the list of applicants. The
applicant will be notified if his/her request is not respected.

The successful applicant must comply with the guidelines that apply to the position at any time.

Application and CV should be sent via the link “Apply for this position”.

The application should contain a short summary of the applicant’s
research interests and motivation for applying for the position, and
the names and contact details of two referees.

Copies of diplomas/transcripts (bachelor and master) and testimonials
as well as scientific works including a list of publications (all in 3
copies/sorted in 3 identical bundles) should be sent to Department of
Biology, The University of Bergen, PO Box 7803, 5020 Bergen, Norway.

Closing date for applications: .28 June 2009
