MARINE OFFICER
3 Year Appointment – May 2009 – April 2012
Salary £ 17,500 p/a
The role of this exciting new post based in a non-government organisation, is to raise public awareness of marine wildlife issues on the Isle of Man and to provide support to NGO’s and Government Departments on marine topics and issues. The post-holder will have three main areas of responsibility: Basking Shark work, Marine Wildlife Tourism and Marine Conservation issues.
The Marine Officer will be involved in the co-ordination and operation of the Manx Basking Shark Watch public recording scheme and website, volunteer co-ordination, shark research programme and analysis and dissemination of data. They will be responsible for developing and promoting marine interpretation and education material for the public, liaising with government and non-government bodies, and providing talks and information. They will also comment on and respond to major planning and development proposals impacting on the marine environment of the Isle of Man and its territorial waters.
A full driving licence and familiarity with IT systems are essential. Experience with boat handling and RYA certification will be an advantage but training will be provided. This post requires a very flexible approach to working times as much of the work in the summer season will be outside normal office hours and at weekends.
